Jeffrey Cairns

From his arrival in Japan in 1986, Jeff’s love for the Japanese traditional bamboo flute, the Shakuhachi, took root. He progressed under the guidance of Kinko-ryu master Tsurugi Kyomudo, to the point that he finds himself today teaching the Kinko-ryu repertoire to his students in Japan, the United States and Canada. For many years, he has also participated in yearly excursions into the mountains of central Kyushu to harvest madake bamboo appropriate for crafting shakuhachi.

Co-Owner of Kumamoto, Japan-based BigFish Recording Studio, Kumamoto, Japan, Jeff has become a notable international figure in cross-cultural studies of shakuhachi, is a moderator of the International Shakuhachi Forum, and frequently performs on  the world stage.
